About the Glenlivet distillery
George Smith founded The Glenlivet in 1824 as the first licensed distillery in its glen under the 1823 Excise Act — a move that reputedly obliged him to carry pistols against his unlicensed neighbours. Its smooth, floral Speyside style helped define the category, and it trades places with Glenfiddich as the world’s best-selling single malt. Collectors focus on the older age statements, the Cellar Collection archives and discontinued vintage bottlings.
