About the Yoichi distillery

Yoichi was founded in 1934 on Hokkaido by Masataka Taketsuru, the chemist who learned whisky-making in Scotland and is remembered as the father of Japanese whisky. The distillery still direct-fires some of its stills with coal, producing a muscular, peaty, maritime malt closer to old-school Scotch than any other Japanese whisky. Nikka withdrew Yoichi’s age statements in 2015 as aged stocks ran dry, and those discontinued bottlings have been prized on the secondary market ever since.
